Safely remove USB devices in Windows XP &
ME
You can corrupt a USB drive by taking it
off the system incorrectly. Windows XP and ME both have a procedure
that should be followed to ensure the drives are not busy when you
remove/disconnect them.
To remove USB hardware safely, both XP and ME utilize an icon (has
a green arrow over a gray rectangle) in the lower right hand System
Tray that, when you put your cursor over, a pop-up says "Safely
Remove Hardware."
You can use this icon three ways:
- If you already know then name or drive letter of the hardware
you wish to remove, you can left click the icon, and it will show
you a list of the USB removable hardware. You then left click
to highlight the name of the piece you want removed. After you
left click on the selected device, WAIT until a pop-up tells you
the device is OK to be removed. If you are told it is busy, do
not remove the device. Wait a couple minutes and then repeat the
above steps.
- If you are not sure what the device you wish to remove is called,
you can either double click the icon or right click it and then
click on the Safely Remove Hardware pop-up. A window will open
showing you all devices available. Highlight the one you think
may be the one you want and then click on stop. A window will
open to show you (two or three ways!) what the device actually
is. If it is not the correct device, click Cancel and select another.
When you have selected the correct device, click OK to remove/disconnect
it. WAIT until a pop-up tells you the device is OK to be removed.
If you are told it is busy, do not remove the device. Wait a couple
minutes and then repeat the above steps.
