Who are the Friends?
The Friends of the Mary Johnston Memorial Library (FMJML) is a not-for-profit
group that formed to help the Mary Johnston Memorial Library raise
funds to meet operating expenses. Most people think the library is
fully supported by government funds, but that is not true. So we —
local people who are young, old, male, female, and with a variety
of skills and talents — join together to take a little time out
of our busy lives to help ensure our library’s survival.
What do the Friends of the Library do?
Everyone has a special flair or talent or way of doing something
that FMJML can put to work to make a difference for the library.
Some members and volunteers help keep the gardens and shrubs in
shape. Some change light bulbs or wash windows. Our “artsy-craftsy”
members make shirts, pins, and book bags to sell. Some run the family
movie nights. And we always need help with book and bake sales and
other fundraising projects. Come join us and help us raise funds

Even though we are living in an electronic age, our world still
needs local libraries. Libraries provide a meeting place for children’s
groups, genealogical societies, book clubs, etc. A library nurtures
new knowledge, ideas, and creativity. Every village, town, and city
in the world benefits greatly from the questing atmosphere of a
library. As a member or volunteer of FMJML, you help your library
to help your community become a better place to live.
Must Members Attend Meetings?
Friends of the Mary Johnston Memorial Library currently meet at
7:00 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month, at the Mary Johnston
Memorial Library, 114 North Court Street, Standish, Michigan. This
day and time was decided to be the most convenient for most members.
Our meeting day and time may change in the future, according to
the needs of the majority of the members. Members and volunteers
are not required to attend meetings, but FMJML works best when they
do. It is helpful when members attend meetings because they offer
insight into a particular problem or make suggestions for upcoming
projects.
How can I Join Friends of the Library?
You just need to contact us or come to a meeting. No membership
fees are charged! If you wish to become a Member or Volunteer, come
to a Thursday night, 7:00 meeting or call our current Membership
